Action Spreads to Whangarei KFC
Sixteen people, including past and present KFC workers gathered outside their store on one of Whangarei’s busiest streets this week to highlight the exploitation of young workers by the fast food industry.
Tooting from the peak traffic was continuous for the hour long action which showed the widespread support in Northland for the campaign and the workers to win a decent living wage, an end to youth rates and secure hours.
The action was covered by the Northern Advocate, the biggest newspaper in the north, the next day.
Nathan Bromberg, a 16 year-old Northland Polytechnic student said he thought youth rates were insulting.
"This country is about non-discrimination but employers are discriminating against youths by paying them less money," he said.
Green Party members and supporters of the Workers Charter were involved in the action.
Green Party MP Sue Bradford’s Minimum Wage (Abolition of Age Discrimination) Amendment Bill has its first reading in Parliament next week. SuperSizeMyPay.com supports the bill but workers believe it should include 15 year-old workers.
